The elementary education program prepares candidates to teach children from kindergarten though grade 8. Completion of the program leads to a bachelor of science degree and prepares candidates to pursue an Illinois Type 03 certificate and eligibility to apply for middle school endorsements. The program consists of: general education area of concentration, and professional education courses that address requirements for graduation and the State of Illinois' requirements for certification.
General Education Courses
- Writing/communication Skills (12), to include (6) in written communication, (3) in oral communication, and (3) in literature.
- Mathematics (9), to include (6) in mathematics foundations for teachers, and (3) in statistics for teachers.
- Natural sciences (9), to include a life/biological science course, a physical sciences course, and one course must include a laboratory component.
- History/social science (15), to include one (3) course in U.S. history, one (3) course in U.S. government, one (3) course in geography, one additional (3) elective in history, and (3) in general psychology.
- Literature and fine arts (6)
- Health and physical development (2)
- Philosophy 150 and one (3) elective in philosophy.
- Religious Studies (6)
- One (3) course with a multicultural focus. A course used to satisfy another program requirement may be used to satisfy the multicultural requirement, as appropriate. A list of approved courses is available in the School of Education.
- Additional study in an approved area of concentration. This consists of (18) of study, (9) of which must be taken at the 200 level or higher at a 4-year institution; approved single discipline areas are: art, biology, computer science, English, history, mathematics, music, political science, psychology, sociology, Spanish; interdisciplinary concentrations include: math/computer science, humanities, social science, language arts, general science, ESL/bilingual.

Requirements for Degree
Candidates in the elementary program major in education and must complete a minimum of (42) in education, a minimum of (18) in an approved subject area concentration, the University core requirements, and additional certification requirements.
