Core Curriculum Principles

  1. Major, minor or supportive courses may fulfill core requirements where appropriate, thereby allowing such courses to be double-counted for requirements.
  2. A single course, which may correspond with two core requirements, may not be counted in fulfillment of two core requirements simultaneously. In such a case, the student must designate which requirement to satisfy.
  3. In selecting among options for fulfilling core requirements, the student must satisfy all designated prerequisites.
  4. Core requirements for the B.A. and the B.S. degrees are the same for all but one category. The B.S. degree requires 6 additional hours of mathematics-science courses required by the major or the professional program.
  5. Foreign culture options commonly include courses from the departments of Anthropology, Art, Foreign Language, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies. Current schedules should be consulted for appropriate listings. Education/teacher certification students should note that courses satisfying the SXU foreign culture requirement do not necessarily fulfill the state requirement for a non-Western culture course. An appropriate academic adviser should be consulted.
  6. 6. Literature/Fine Arts options commonly include courses from the Art, English, Foreign Language, Humanities, Music and Speech departments. Note that not all 100-level courses will satisfy this requirement. An appropriate academic adviser and current class schedules should be consulted for an accurate listing of course sections fulfilling this requirement.

To promote the success and well-being of all newly matriculated students, the University includes the following requirement:
