Chicago Campus, Warde Academic Center S-121, (773) 298-3291
Information Services provides support to University students, faculty and staff in their use of modern data-based communication technologies. It maintains systems for academic and administrative use including workstations for student use in a variety of information technology labs and in the SXU Diner and student lounge. Students can use these workstations for accessing electronic mail, the Web, and productivity software. The library, SXU Diner, cafés, student lounges, Warde Glass Walkway, the S Wing, Graham School of Management, Pulaski Center, Schmitt Quad, McCarthy Multipurpose Room, Regina Hall and Pacelli Hall also offer wireless access to the Internet. Information about wireless access can be viewed at http://www.sxu.edu/info_svcs/wireless_access.asp.
Additional information about using the technology resources at Saint Xavier can be found at http://www.sxu.edu/resources/technologies. Help is available through the Information Services Help Desk in S-121, at ext. 3291, and through techhelp@sxu.edu.
CLAWS (Online Registration and Other Services)
The Cougar Local Academic Web Site, CLAWS, offers the most up-to-date course information directly from the University databases. It allows any admitted student with an active program and without an outstanding account balance to search for classes, register, make schedule changes, make payments, check financial aid and account status, and check academic history and grades. The CLAWS site allows you to retrieve information and effect changes over the Internet for which you would otherwise have to come to Saint Xavier. CLAWS is available between 7 a.m. and midnight seven days a week from your local Web browser. Anyone can search for classes using CLAWS. Other features of CLAWS require a username and a password that are sent to your SXU electronic mailbox at mail.sxu.edu. For the initial registration for a semester or term, all undergraduate students and all School of Education graduate students must also have the electronic approval of their advisors.
Electronic Mail
Each registered student also receives the use of an SXU electronic mailbox accessible at http://mail.sxu.edu through your Web browser or e-mail (IMAP client) software. Electronic mail login and password information is sent to all newly registered students through the U.S. Postal Service. Students are encouraged to use this resource because the University has begun communicating important information to students through this channel. For instance, your login and password information for CLAWS is sent to your SXU electronic mailbox. If you did not receive this information or if you have questions about accessing your electronic mailbox, please stop by Information Services in S-121 or OPC-166.
Software, Internet and Printer Access
Windows and MacOS workstations, networked printers and Internet access are available in the information technology labs. Students use their SXU Domain username and password to access lab workstations, software applications, the Internet, and the printers. Instructions for accessing these services can be viewed at http://www.sxu.edu/info_svcs/domain_access.asp. Students also have campus and remote access to centralized file storage at http://webfiles.sxu.edu. Printing documents in the labs requires an SXU identification card (Cougar Card) and sufficient funds remaining in an associated lab printing account.
There are 13 student labs on the Chicago campus (some of which are dedicated to classroom instruction) and four labs at Orland Park campus (some of which are dedicated to classroom instruction). Special-purpose labs (which are generally restricted to use by students in the respective disciplines) include the Nursing Resource Center (E-105), the Art & Design Lab (L-114), the Math and Computer Science Labs (S-102 and S-104), the Music Lab (G-102), and the Learning Center (L-109B). The Learning Center also offers tutoring to students using computer-assisted instruction. Information about these labs can be viewed at http://www.sxu.edu/info_svcs/labs.asp..
