Saint Xavier University provides a professional Public Safety Department to serve its students, faculty and staff. The Department of Public Safety is committed to the highest quality of protective services in order to maintain and improve our unique educational environment and quality of life. The goal of the Department of Public Safety is to provide professional responses to all safety and service-oriented requests from the campus community.
The University is patrolled 24 hours a day by Public Safety police and security officers using vehicles equipped with a mobile computer and emergency response equipment. Our regular patrols are augmented during the academic year by student walk and bicycle patrol officers.
The Department of Public Safety is involved in a multi-year process of transitioning a number of security officer positions to state-certified police officers. Sworn members of the University Police Division possess the same authority as municipal peace officers and county sheriffs.
Officers are responsible for observing, reporting and taking appropriate actions in all instances of criminal and suspicious activities. They are also responsible for detecting and reporting fire and safety hazards, as well as implementing evacuation procedures.
The department is responsible for maintaining the University's emergency operation center, as well as the facilities for radio communications and implementation of contingency alert plans when conditions warrant. Protective escorts, battery jumps and vehicle lockout assistance, anywhere on campus, are also provided by Public Safety. Assistance can be obtained by using one of the red, yellow or gray public safety phones located in the parking lots and throughout campus. In the event of an injury or illness, officers will coordinate emergency medical/first-aid treatment and transportation with the Chicago Fire Department paramedics.
Public Safety also operates the University's Shuttle Service which is provided from the Warde Academic Center (McGuire Hall entrance) to the United Methodist Church, Off-Campus Housing Apartments, as well as the Pulaski (parking lot 14) and Driehaus Centers. Each shuttle stop is clearly designated with a sign. The West Shuttle departs 110th and Kilbourn every 30 minutes beginning at 7:30 a.m. and running through 5:30 p.m. and the East Shuttle departs 97th and Kedzie every 35 minutes, terminating at McGuire Hall at 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. An all stop evening shuttle has been added and will run to on-campus and off-campus locations until 10:30 p.m. If you are parked in Lot 14 (Pulaski Center) and need a protective escort after 10:30 p.m., please dial "0" from a campus phone or (773) 298-3541 to contact a Public Safety Dispatcher.
The department also operates a weekend shuttle van, Friday through Sunday, which transports students to the Midway Airport CTA Orange line train. The shuttle also makes transports to several off-campus stops to local businesses, and off-campus housing. Please contact Public Safety Dispatcher at (773)-298-3541 to make a local shuttle request during the hours listed on schedule.
The department is also responsible for regulating traffic and parking enforcement on campus. All students who are attending regular academic classes and who park on campus, as well as faculty and staff, must register their vehicles with the Department of Public Safety. Permits are available on CLAWS, in the Public Safety Office (CSC-100), at the Warde Academic Center Business Office (A209), and at the Graham School of Business. General-use parking permits for commuters are $100, and residential overnight parking permits are $200. Permits are valid for the entire academic year and expire each year on August 31. For more information, call (773) 298-3950.
